It is indisputable that steel is much more resilient than brass, and this is particularly true when it comes to the VW 6-speed manual transmission. In the past, VW has used shift forks with parts made of brass, which can be unreliable. When used regularly, brass forks can, unfortunately, break, resulting in a car that is stuck in gear. If a shift fork breaks, the transmission will need to be opened up and the part replaced (see the photos on this page). Needless to say, this can leave you stranded.

It is wise to switch out the gear forks when you are taking out the transmission for other repairs, such as putting in a high-performance clutch and flywheel. This will save you time and avoid having to do the same job twice. When you are replacing the shifting forks in a 2004+ VW 6 speed transmission, you must also get a one-time-use transmission cap for 2009+ models with a 02Q 6-speed, or this cap for 02M or 02Q 6-speed transmissions. Additionally, you will need a tube of silicone sealant to seal between certain parts where no gasket is used. Make sure to add these items to your order before you check out.
